Russell Sorenson, PhD, is a clinical psychologist providing mental health services through integrated healthcare at Mountain Utah Family Medicine since 2021, where he has seen patients from Sevier, Wayne, Millard, Piute, and Sanpete counties and even having some patients come from out of state to work with him. His services include conducting psychological evaluations for presurgical bariatric patients and individual counseling for patients 13 years of age and older. The nature of his work as a generalist lends itself well to practice in rural Utah; specifically, helping him provide treatment for a broad range of community needs including, but not limited to, depression, anxiety, and trauma.
Dr. Sorenson’s clinical orientation is founded in humanistic psychology, which he supplements with psychodynamic, developmental, cognitive, and behavioral approaches to tailor treatment to best fit the needs of those meeting with him. He is involved in bridging the gap between behavioral and medical services by both actively collaborating with medical healthcare providers to increase the efficacy of patient care and through his volunteer work as a board member of the Rural Health Association of Utah.
Dr. Sorenson earned his undergraduate degree in psychology at BYU-I, his master’s degree in community counseling at the University of Oklahoma, and his master’s and doctoral degrees in clinical psychology at Pacific University. Through practicums, internships, residencies, and post-educational employment, he has gained experience in settings that include domestic violence centers, inpatient hospitals, home-based treatment centers, outpatient community care centers, college/trade schools, neuropsychological assessment teams, family medicine practices, and supervision of pre-doctoral interns. He enjoys a wide variety of activities, including BBQ/smoking, hiking, gardening, camping, disc golf, fishing, board games, beard growing, and just about anything with family and friends.
